North Florida Growing Note:

Hardy Mums grow well in the Florida Panhandle and can return as perennials when planted in full sun and well-drained soil. Plant them in the ground as soon as possible so their roots have time to become established before freezing weather. Mums planted very late in the fall may be less likely to survive their first winter.

After flowering, leave several inches of stems in place through the winter to help protect the crown. Apply a light layer of mulch after cold weather arrives, but do not pile mulch directly over the plant’s crown. Remove the dead stems in early spring when new growth appears.

For fuller plants with more fall flowers, pinch approximately one inch from the growing tips when the plants reach 6–8 inches tall. Continue pinching new growth every few weeks through late June or early July. Stop pinching after that so flower buds can develop for fall.
